What do you suppose would be the outcome of an attempt to organize atheism into a legitimate religion?

holiday patterns
r u randy? asked:

I assume that this experiment would include regular meeting days, member volunteer-ism, contributions and the like… i.e., any or all of the details that might reflect or pattern themselves after any typically established modern-day religion. TV broadcasts, billboards, websites, bell towers and official “religious” holidays would all be fair game for this hypothetical question.

Your thoughts please.
Would an annual “Darwin Day” be silly? Would it be silly to support or rebuff political candidates according to their favor?
since it cannot be proved that there is no god, would “Atheism, the religion” not be a religion of “logically reasoned faith”?
Could such a “religion” become an attractive alternative to being “born again”? Would it qualify for tax-free status? Would it offer science scholarships to the needy?

    Atheism is not a religion.

  3. Aaron says:

The outcome would be a lot of laughter. We don’t need to get together in order to convince one another that you and your beliefs are silly.

  4. gimmenamenow says:

Um, they wouldn’t call it a religion… maybe a club of some sort… secret decoder rings for everyone!

  5. Sun says:

I think the Atheists would laugh their ***** off.

  6. MyPreshus says:

Well, maybe if it happened, they would be considered a legitimate organization and people would stop saying they don’t believe in anything. (Well, on second thought, maybe not.)

At any rate, I think it’s a cool idea. I nominate you for President.

There really is a church of Atheism in Texas. I read an article about it last year.

  8. Jayelle says:

It wouldn’t work. All atheists have in common is the belief that there is no God or spirit, that’s it. They could organize politically against laws that harm them, or perhaps have a support group, but it wouldn’t be a religion.

  9. Bad Liberal says:

I think not. A great advantage of being an atheist is not to have to do all the ritualisitic crap.

Your question is quite illogical. You assume that us with no religious beliefs have some innane need to group together, share our thoughts and views, and somehow worship those views. We don’t. We don’t need holidays, we relish our freedom from the shackles of manmade religion everyday!

What are you talking about? It already is.

It would be more like a club than a religion

  13. OPM says:

Since atheism is the lack of religious belief how could one organize it into a religion?
