random bruies & purple/red spotting ?

holiday patterns
Jassss asked:

in the holidays my sleeping patterns havent been that good and they have been getting worse, and i’ve been waking up or just randomly realising i have bruises on my legs or arms, assuming i just hit something by accident the bruising stopped after a week, but now i’ve been getting red/purpleish spotting on my stomach and legs, and i;ve googled abit and the random medical stuff hasnt helped me feel any better, i’d liek to think it wasnt serious.
but does being sleep deprived make u bruise easily?
can certain medication make u bruise, for example the pill?
or even being low on vitamins or something else?

any ideas?

I’ve heard that Vitamin K deficiency can cause easy bruising…You’d have to look up the sources of it — it is not typically available as a supplement…

I don’t want to alarm you but that does not sound good at all.

I think you need to go in and have some blood work done.

I am thinking leukemia. Even if it’s not that it is likely some blood disorder, so you need to see a hemotologist. But get some bloodwork done so your platelets and other things can be assessed.

I can’t remember the name of it but there are people who bruise easily and if they get cut they can bleed to death because their blood doesn’t properly clot. It might be that, and at least that is not as serious as leukemia, but if it were leukemia, it may not be, but if it were, you need to start treatment immediately.

    Okay I found it..http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haemophilia

    It’s called haemophilia but I don’t know that it’s that…doesn’t mention bruising.

There is also a condition called von Willebrand disease.
    That is inherited usually.

And it could be due to liver problems as well which can affect the blood clotting mechanisms.

Here is a site you can look at, and then you can you can google “bruising easily” for more information too.

If you scroll down you will see comments by others who bruise easily and their reasons.

The reason I say LEUKEMIA is because I know plenty of kids who have it and when it’s progressed they get petaechia and bruising. But let’s hope it’s not that.

My philosophy is be prepared for the worst cause anything else is good news.

You definitely need to seek medical care and get your condition assessed.

I usually get random bruises but that’s usually because I forget how I got them.

How bad are they? If they’re pretty bad, you probably should have woken up if you’d caused them in your sleep. All the same, clear up a little before you sleep, to make sure you don’t hurt yourself somehow while you rest.

As for the spotting on your arms and legs – Not a clue. If it’s anything like a rash, ask your doctor about it.

Finally, these could indicate that there’s something missing in your diet. Vitamin C, K and E deficiencies all contribute to easy bruising. Make sure you’re getting all the nutrients you need by keeping a well-balanced diet. If need be, take multivitamins, but I’d recommend you see your doctor first.

P.S: Don’t worry about Leukemia, as some people are suggesting. Vitamin K comes in many forms, so you won’t find it as a supplement, unless you take Folic acid. It’s mostly found in green leafy veg though. Good luck to you.

I started having similar symptoms 4 years ago. After several doctors and tests Lupus is the tentative diagnosis. Best of luck to you.

For peace of mind I would suggest going to see a doctor and asking for a blood test, there are a lot of different things that can cause bruising, or look like its bruising, like burst blood vessels or even some medications (methotrixate) even problems with blood cells, so please for peace of mind go and see your doctor and make sure to get a professional opinion, not trying to scare you but I would be very worried if I was getting bruises and/or red/purpleish marks like that, wishing you the very best..

I’m not sure if this answers your questions but there was a medical case long long ago where a women kept waking up in the morning to find bruises on her legs without any recollection of how she got them. Freud did a psychoanalysis and found out that it was a manifestation of an unconscious desire (it’s a long story but that’s the gist of it)

It’s best you see a doctor rightaway. It can be something really serious.

My cousin had the same problem and went to the doctor who did a blood test and he had no platelets which make blood clot. Turned out he had aplastic anemia and after six months of treatment succumbed to an infection. Better get checked ASAP.
