Part time worker needs advice?

holiday patterns
SALLY D asked:

I work a 30 hour week over five days (contracted). When a bank holiday falls the department closes and we all get our bank holiday hours taken away from our annual leave entitlement…which I understand is correct…but then..My real question is should I then have to work my 30 hours in the next four days???it does not seem quite right.

Plus if I am rostered to work below my weekly hours because there is just not enough work can my employer then roster me in the future to make this time up without any consultation with me..

Its the first time I have ever worked part-time and am getting frustrated with what I thought would be a routine working pattern.

I get paid monthly so its not the financial issue but the difficulty is trying to organise childcare and routine.

Your serious views would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks everyone for your help.

I have read and re-read my contract..and it quite clearly states that my annual leave hours includes departmental closures including bank holidays..

So I will broach the subject about being rostered above 30 hours on a bank holiday week.

Interestingly, today I had a chat with my manager because I had been notifyed that I owed the department 11 hours…well we worked through it and it was all wrong and it turned out I had worked over 27 hours extra…

So I think I am just going to go to Citizens Advice Bureau..when I can get the time…oh perhaps I can ask for time off now, they owe it to me.

While working for your present employer, seek other job opportunity’s. You will be amazed what is out there.

The chances are the bank holiday will be classed as one of your 2 days off. If you are contracted then I suggest you read your contract. Most employers do give you at least 7 days notice of your shift and they expect that to be enought time for you tell them of any problems.
It all depends on the employer, some are nice and do all they can to help others are assho1es who wan’t to cause problems.

Not sure but if u make ripples with the boss u may become unpopular and end up with no hours at all, 1 thing though, make sure u r getting your tax credits if u have a kid.

-Interesting question, but I am not now up-to-date with employment legislation. However, I would suggest if possible to get yourself along to the Citizens Advice Bureau. If you cannot manage a visit telephone them. They will have advisors on hand to give you the information you require.

Try not too rock the boat until you have your facts gathered together and if you have a contract of employment read it through thoroughly, and pay particular attention to your working hours requirement.

In reality part time workers in the UK have the same rights as those of full time workers, so it would be interesting to see how things pan out for you.

Good luck with the childcare etc. I am sure that everything will work out to your satisfaction. Good night to you.

i dont think you should have to work the 30 hours in the week, because most companies would pay you double time if you did work that bank holiday. so to not work it should mean you get day off and get paid and still have a day in lieu. if they add the bank holidays onto your annual entitlement that is. oh dear i dont think thats very clear but dont know how to explain it better!

you call 30 hours a week part time, to us thats full time. We work from home out the house about 15 hrs aweek the rest is at home with the kids. We earn about £1500 + in a 4 week period. But you shouldn’t be rostered on to do the full 30 housrs as its taken out of your hols, and part of the hours for the week.

I’d suggest you contact ACAS or your local citizens advice bureau. Their services are free.

    All the best.
