shannonlee asked:
In cooking, we have to do a project about different places around the world and some of the foods they eat and I’m doing Japan. One of the questions we have to answer is “What holidays/feasts are celebrated in this culture” and I can’t seem to find it anywhere. Also, another question I’m having a hard time finding is “What are the typical meal patterns of genealized population”. If you know anything to these two questions, please reply. It would mean a lot.

Research:
Hinna Matsuri (girls day)
Tanabata
Kodomo no hi (children’s day)
White Day and Valentines
and Chinese New Year
These are all popular holidays in Japan.
Before a meal, Japanese say “Itadakimasu” and after they say “Gochisosama deshita”
To get a launch pad on research for the second question, start with this Wikipedia article.
Major Japanese holidays include:
1. New Years
2. Coming of Age day (for people turning 20).
3. Children’s Day
4. The Emperor’s birthday.
Submajor holidays include:
1. National Foundation Day
2. Equinox of Autumn and Spring
3. Showa day
4. Greenery day
5. Constitutional Memorial Day
6. Labor Thanksgiving day
7. Health and Sports Day
8. Culture Day
9. Respect for the Aged
there are a lot. And a lot of festivals too, like Hinamatsuri, hanami, Shichi-go-san, and Oomisoka.
There isn’t something that people generally eat aside from Rice. Sushi isn’t consumed everyday, so don’t think that.
As for Tess, “Before a meal, Japanese say “Itadakimasu” and after they say “Gochisosama deshita”"
This isn’t said before EVERY meal. When I go my friends’ homes, they don’t say it. And you don’t hear it around restaurants.
About the meals, try looking in cookbooks. Really! Its helps a lot! Try going to an international market and checking out the Japanese foods sections. I’ll see what else I can find.
Really traditional japanese food is healthy and has no meat. Most people dont eat this anymore. There is a huge upward trend of fast food and convenience store food in Japan and I wouldn’t be surprised if they outdid America in a few years. I’m pretty sure the amount of McDonalds in japan is more than in America and they have other western and Japanese burger chains as well as Japanese style fast food.
There are still many people that stay healthy but most of them are older and they cook at home. Soba and sushi resteraunts are pretty easy to find and so are Italian resteraunts.
Also people drink with their meals.
I’m not sure where you could find articles about this, just type Japan fast food eating trends into a search engine.
