hannah asked:
I’ve had 8 week on school holidays, and I go back to school on the 28th of January (Australia).
For the past 8 weeks, I’ve been going to bed at around 3-6am and not waking up until about 1-4pm. Some nights, I don’t even go to sleep at all.
I have to start getting up at about 7:30am, but I have NO IDEA how I’m going to manage that.
Hope you can help

Thanks for reminding me to take some sleeping aides so I can get to sleep.
Well , you should get to sleep early ! Its like asking how can I avoid being lazy and net addict – hey u gotta take steps to do that … Sleep early ! I too have the same problem and this is what I tell mysef lol
Get in bed a lot earlier than you think is appropriate. If need be, stay in bed for most of the day until it’s time to get up and continue on your daily activities. If you’re trying to get up at 7:30a, go to bed and be IN the bed making attempts to sleep at 7:30pm. I don’t care if that’s early, you’re bound to sleep by the time you need to wake.
And if you’re not tired, then run laps around the block until you’re tired. Then run 3 more laps. Then walk 2. Then try going to sleep.
If that doesn’t work, then do physical exercises like pushups or chinups or situps. All of these will tire you out so you can do the wakeups (pun) like you want to.
The key is to get tired somehow. Or eat some shredded wheat with a lot of sugar. That should help put you to sleep. I had a bowl of 3 pieces of shredded wheat one time with way too much sugar and then I was tired 45 minutes later. I went to bed not more than 4 hours after I woke up and I was out for about 5 hours afterward.
You are going to turn your system upside down – it’ll be like having jet lag from flying from the US to Australia – the time is backwards. You have to get up when you want to go to sleep, and you oughta sleep when you feel like getting up.
So, like jet lag, the first couple of days are going to be tough. You might want to start a couple of days early to give your system a chance to re-set itself. Otherwise, you might find yourself sleeping in class, and snapping irritably at your mates.
Specfically what you need to do is go to bed at 10:00 pm. Turn out the lights, keep them out, and stay in bed until at least 6 am the next morning. Do this at least 2 days prior to school starting again.
Just as an aside, the japanese nobility didn’t have much use for clocks or regular hours. They fequently would have moon-gazing parties or star-gazing parties, or all night poetry parties, or commision plays to be performed at 2 am. They saw no need to be constrained by day light if they were not doing manual labor (and, of course, nobles NEVER did manual labor….)
A nice cup of dandelion tea soothes my soul and body so I am able to sleep at night.
But sometimes, if this does not work out… a nice jog and some cheese on crackers really relax my body and help me to fall asleep!
Good luck darling!
