In CA, correctional officers only get holidays off if it falls on their regular day off. When a holiday is worked, it’s overtime pay and you get 4 hours of holiday time pay on your books which can be used towards vacation, sick days, etc.

The shifts change. Your first 2 years are an apprenticeship. You must work X hours in all 3 shifts in various locations in the prison. It takes years to get decent hours and days off. It’s all seniority. It’s not uncommon to have 10 yrs in and still work weekends. A work week is 40 hours. You can work more or less.
Once you finish your apprenticeship, you’re elgible to post and bid. If your bid is accepted, you’re guaranteed a position for 3 yrs. But this is also by seniority.. those with the most, get the jobs they want… everyone else gets the leftovers. Just have to remember that your time will come.
There is a part time job that as long as you work 11 days a month, you keep your benefits. Great for those who want to work but not full time.
    Hope this answers your questions.
