2. Learning to knit. I have knitting needles and yarn. My daughter is going to teach me. I need help relaxing–hopefully this will do the trick.

Joshua H asked:

My grandmother has made me and my cousins slippers every few years for holidays and stuff. I have learned how to knit in the last while, and I want to make a pair for her. Unfortunately im having trouble finding a suitable pattern. There are lots of slippers out there, but i want a pattern similar to what she has made for me.
Looking at the slippers, I can try to describe a bit. I know one knitter told me it was like a Corncob pattern, but i could never kind anything online about it.
Its extremely simple looking. It looks like the bottom is a separate piece, with a mattress stitch holding it to the top, or some sort of seam. On the top piece, the stitches look vertical, just from looking at it, until it reaches the toe area, where it abruptly switches to horizontal. Everything looks like simple K1P1, except for the change in direction. Also the toe comes to a circle, like it was knit with circular needles. I cant even tell if the bottom is a separate piece really
I would love some help

Emma asked:

I am an advanced knitter, and that is my primary craft. I am an intermediate crocheter.

I am making the raccoon (crocheted) in the pattern at http://sarahanns.com/crochetworks/animals.html

I am working on the hand/arm, which is found in the mouse pattern on the second page.

The directions are:
HAND: Ch 4, sl st in 2nd and 3rd ch from hook, (ch 3, sl st in 2nd and 3rd ch from hook) twice, draw up a loop in the end of each of the first two “fingers” made, yo and draw thru all 3 loops on hook, sl st in first ch made. Continue on to…
ARM: Ch 1, 3 sc in same ch as sl st, ch 1, turn. (Sc in each sc, ch 1, turn) three times; draw up a loop in each sc, yo and draw thru all 4 loops on hook, ch 1, sl st at base of last stitch. Fasten off leaving 6″ of yarn. Sew to sides of body

Please don’t simply define the abbreviations for me. I know them already. I don’t understand the hand instructions. I think the arm makes enough sense. However, I don’t have a clue what I’m supposed to do for the hand. None of that makes sense to me.

Experienced crocheters, could you please put the hand instructions into very basic, very thorough directions for me?

Thanks you!

Happy holidays.

I grew up making gingerbread houses every year with my mom. Being a military family I won’t be able to make the trip home to TX for the holidays this year but still want to carry on this tradition with my own family. My mom’s pattern is made of paper that she had laminated and says it’s from Germany but doesn’t see a company name on the back or anything. I don’t want to buy a cheap kit from walmart because I don’t need the extras. I’ll be baking my own gingerbread and making my own icing using my mom’s recipe… just need the pattern. Is there a way of finding a good pattern to print off the internet and having it enlarged at a photo copy store or a store that sells just the pattern, not the kit? I’m in TN… don’t have time to order offline as I’ll be starting this project this weekend. Thanks so much!
