SALLY D asked:

I work a 30 hour week over five days (contracted). When a bank holiday falls the department closes and we all get our bank holiday hours taken away from our annual leave entitlement…which I understand is correct…but then..My real question is should I then have to work my 30 hours in the next four days???it does not seem quite right.

Plus if I am rostered to work below my weekly hours because there is just not enough work can my employer then roster me in the future to make this time up without any consultation with me..

Its the first time I have ever worked part-time and am getting frustrated with what I thought would be a routine working pattern.

I get paid monthly so its not the financial issue but the difficulty is trying to organise childcare and routine.

Your serious views would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks everyone for your help.

I have read and re-read my contract..and it quite clearly states that my annual leave hours includes departmental closures including bank holidays..

So I will broach the subject about being rostered above 30 hours on a bank holiday week.

Interestingly, today I had a chat with my manager because I had been notifyed that I owed the department 11 hours…well we worked through it and it was all wrong and it turned out I had worked over 27 hours extra…

So I think I am just going to go to Citizens Advice Bureau..when I can get the time…oh perhaps I can ask for time off now, they owe it to me.

How many hours total over the year for both? What does the equation used to figure this out look like? The 8 to 5 is Mon to Fri w. normal holidays but much less money.

when you work a night shift finishing between 2.0a.m and 7.0a.m [depends on orders in] should that day be counted as your day off or as the first day of your annual holiday.they are changing my shift patterns to 3 days 8 am to 5 pm.3days nights 5 pm until finish [generally 3-5 am] then three days off.but the first day off I will have worked several hours .Is this a day off? And they want to cut down on our holiday allowance as we are now having so many more days off.Does any one know if there any rules concerning when a day off is a day off.
